Experience-driven design for heavy industry
The turn to service and solution business requires attention to user experience also in business-to-business industry. After an introduction to Aalto University, this talk will show examples of experience-driven design for Finnish metal and engineering companies. Through the examples, the core idea of experience-driven design is introduced, as well as the difference between usability and user experience.
VirpiRoto, PhD, is a Research Fellow at Aalto University, School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Her mission is to make user experience work more systematic in companies, so she is best known for her work on clarifying the concept of user experience and providing the means to evaluate experiences. At the Department of Design of Aalto University, her research focuses on designing for experiences. She has always worked in between the industry and academia, first at Nokia Research Center and then on industry-driven research projects. She has acted as the UX community chair at CHI'13, chair of SIGCHI Finland, and as the Industrial programme chair in INTERACT'11 and MobileHCI conferences. She has co-authored some of the most cited scientific UX publications and given keynote talks in various events. See allaboutux.org/virpi for more information.

Viewpoints to User experience: Product properties, Symbolic Meaning and Time Dimension
The presentation will discuss different viewpoints to user experience: What user experience is, what product properties are related to user experience and how time changes it. User experience is not only related to useful functions but there are many other design aspects that may have critical influence on how users experience products and services. The aim of the presentation is give advice how to consider different aspects of user experience and design for good user experience.
The speaker is Sari Kujala from Finland. She is a Research Fellow at the Department of Computer Science, Aalto University. Her background is in psychology and cognitive science. In addition, she has received Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction in 2002. Her research interests focus on user-centered design, requirements engineering, user experience and service design.
