“Institute for Engineering Design and Simulations (IEDS)” was established by Northwestern Polytechnical University (NWPU, China) and Northwestern University (NU, USA) in September 2004. The directors of IEDS are served by professor LIU Geng (NWPU) and professor Qian Jane Wang (NU). Professor CUI Junzhi, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, serves as director of academic committee. The existing staffs are 13 persons, including 6 professors, 3 associate professors, and 4 lecturers.
The Institute’s main goal is to advance the state-of-the-art of mechanical design aimed at developing a better understanding and new methods through virtual and physical prototyping simulations, macro-micro modeling and failure mechanism analyses of engineering systems. The research interests ofIEDSincluding advanced transmission technology, engineering design and control of integrated electromechanical systems, creative design theory and simulation technology. The IEDS area is about 500 square meters with fixed assets worth more than 5 million RMB Yuan.
